What is the role of rookie Connor McGovern?

The Dallas Cowboys used their second pick as an offensive offensive lineman for the second year in a row. But where is the rookie on the line?

The Dallas Cowboys entered the screaming no-go draft. The approach was therefore to choose the best players available. The reception has decided to choose Connor McGovern, a guard / center of Penn State. McGovern was would have the highest rated player Cowboys' when their number was called late in the third round.

It was a dubious choice, since the offensive line is already one of the most powerful units on the list. The left tackle, the right guard and the central (most likely) position are taken over by Tyron Smith, Zack Martin and Travis Frederick.

Dallas invested a second-round pick last year in Connor Williams, who played the left guard and progressed throughout the season. It is therefore unlikely that they give up on Williams and the team does not use a third round choice as an insurance policy.

One possibility is that the Cowboys are trading right against La'el Collins. Collins is on the last year of his contract and is charging $ 9.9 million in ceiling space per Spotrac.

In this case, Williams would slide to the right attack – keep in mind that Williams was playing the attack while studying at the University of Texas. Then McGovern would start on the left.

Another scenario is that the Cowboys do not negotiate Collins. Instead, they swap positions between him and Williams (Collins goes to the left guard, Williams to the right tackle). The rookie would not start, but would learn the system and adapt to Cowboy standards with the goal of starting in 2020.

Collins will not be with Dallas in 2020 because they have to pay a lot of young stars. Over the years of contract, players tend to play their best. So, the Cowboys could keep Collins in the team one last year.

At the press conference following the second day of the project, Stephen Jones (director of the player's staff) explained the reasoning behind McGovern's choice:

"What he can do for this offensive line, I mean he's a swing player, he's also a future player. We all know that these kids are getting older and you have to make some tough decisions. We all know what is ahead of us in terms of our list, in terms of the players we will have to play. "

So, take what you want, but it shows that McGovern is not only chosen to be an insurance but to be a starter in the future. It may not be this year. Dallas could keep Collins and Williams in the line of fire, but the front office is considering McGovern a decisive factor for the Dallas Cowboys.
