Six weeks before the 2017 NFL Draft, in the midst of yet another winter in Kansas City, high-ranking members of the Chiefs’ brain trust showed up for a conference call. Clark Hunt, the team owner, was on the phone. So were the three most influential voices at the franchise’s front office: head coach Andy Reid, general manager John Dorsey and co-director of player personnel Brett Veach.

What they discussed that day was so dramatic in its potential to elevate or sink the franchise that some members of the organization, once they learned of the plan, reacted to the idea in two. words: “Holy shit”. The Chiefs, everyone on the call had understood, would try to trade in the first round to take Patrick Mahomes, quarterback of Texas Tech.
