COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State football couldn’t have asked for much more from center than Josh Myers has provided over the past two seasons.
Successfully transitioning to custody, Myers has become one of the best centers in the Big Ten. He has also become an important voice in the squad, as the team captain during a grueling – and ultimately successful – 2020 season.
Myers declared himself for the 2021 NFL Draft Friday night. These are great shoes to fill in an important position, especially since the Buckeyes will also make a breakthrough in a starting first quarter in 2021. Whoever throws the next pass for Ohio State will throw their first. The bond between Myers and Justin Fields helped stabilize the attack, and someone else needs to build that rapport.
The state of Ohio has established several options for a smooth transition to the center.
• Melville, the musketeers and oriental philosophy: in the mind of Harry Miller
Harry Miller seems the most immediate and obvious choice. He was recruited as a center. While he started in left guard most of this season, he moved up to center when Myers had to miss the Michigan State game due to a positive COVID-19 test.
Miller struggled a bit with his shots in this game. On the other hand, Miller’s evolution in two years is impressive under the circumstances.
He was a freshman in the summer, so he didn’t have enrollment in early spring to begin his development. Then its second spring ended with the pandemic after a week. No starter may have been more affected by the weekly uncertainty and the confused season’s stops and starts.
Myers said he sees Miller’s development as part of his responsibility. This supervision could bear fruit for a player whose intellect should play well in the center.
If the Buckeyes ultimately decide Miller makes more sense for long-term custody, Luke Wypler could get a peek as well. The four-star prospect, ranked just outside the top 100 in the 2020 class, will only be a sophomore. Wypler, however, could still be a year away from making a starting level impact.
Myers continued the impressive trend of Ohio State centers started by Billy Price and Pat Elflein. There can be a seamless transition to the next member of this tradition.
