What Ohio State Defense Could Look Like In 2021

The 2021 list for the state of Ohio is more or less complete. The Buckeyes have learned in the past few days, since the disappointing loss to Alabama in the College Football Playoff National Championship game, that the players have declared for the 2021 NFL Draft and who intends to return for the minus a year older in scarlet and gray. The Ohio State Recruiting Class of 2021 is also starting to arrive this week, and all first registrants are expected to be on campus by the end of the weekend.

And while that roster may still change to some extent with transfers in and out, the vast majority of players we know as Buckeyes will be here when the 2021 season kicks off in early September. Bucknuts has previously considered what the Ohio State offense might look like in 2021 and now the focus is on the defensive side of the ball.

Last season, the defense was mixed, finishing No. 6 nationally against the run but 122nd nationally – out of 127 teams – against the pass. The Scarlet and Gray allowed 25.8 points per game which was good but not great. Ohio State has a knack for improving the defense heading into next year with what will hopefully be a full offseason and preseason. With the departure of the players, others will have the opportunity to take on bigger roles and prove they deserve to be on the pitch.

Let’s take a look at what this Buckeye defense might look like in 2021 based on what we know right now.
