When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle walked away from royal life in early 2020, they initially kept quiet about their struggles within their family.

In recent months, however, they have started talking a lot more – Harry in particular – confirming and crushing rumors about his differences with his father Prince Charles and brother Prince William.

News broke on Monday that the 36-year-old royal is expected to release a memoir next year, which will likely expand on what he shared about family, most of which came from his explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey, as well as his appearance in his Apple TV + series, “The Me You Can’t See”.

As the two continue to build their media empire, here’s a look at what Prince Harry has said about his royal parents since stepping down from his crown duties.

Oprah’s interview

Harry and Markle, 39, didn’t say much about their decision to step down from royal life until almost a year after they did.

Lawsuits and a handful of public statements have suggested they left due to intense media coverage and criticism of Markle.

However, in March 2021, the two sat down with Winfrey, 67, to share their experience in detail.

During the chat, Harry told Winfrey he felt trapped in royal life and was surprised he was cut financially and lost his security last year. He also said he felt his family did not support Markle

Harry admitted that he also “went to a very dark place” when Markle was feeling suicidal and was reluctant to tell his family about this issue.

He added that he was “very aware” that his family were “afraid” that the British tabloids would turn on them and stressed that some tabloids were friendly with the Crown.

The royal said his relationship with his father had been damaged, there was “a lot of work to be done” and he felt “really disappointed” with Charles.

In response to a question from Winfrey, Harry said he would not have left royal life without his wife. He said their relationship exposed the restrictions of royal life.

“I couldn’t have, because I was trapped myself,” Harry said. “I didn’t see a way out.

“I was trapped, but I didn’t know I was trapped,” said Harry, before adding: “My father and my brother, they are trapped.”

Harry admitted that he currently has no close relationship with his brother William, who is heir to the throne after their father.

He also took issue with rumors that he intentionally blinded his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, with his decision to separate. He suspects the rumors are coming from the institution.

“I never caught my grandmother off guard,” he said. “I have too much respect for her.

“The me you can’t see”

Shortly after the interview aired, Apple TV + released “The Me You Can’t See,” a series produced by and starring Harry and Winfrey. He focused on mental health, which played a big part in the royal’s life.

During an episode of the show, Harry alleged that his family turned a blind eye when he asked for help regarding media coverage and criticism of his relationship with Markle.

“I thought my family would help, but every request, demand, warning, whatever, comes up against total silence, total neglect,” Harry revealed. “We spent four years trying to make it work. We did everything we could to stay there and keep playing the part and doing the job. But Meghan was struggling.”

Moreover, he claimed his family tried to prevent his royal exit.

“Finally, when I made this decision for my family, I was still told, ‘You can’t do this,'” Harry revealed. “And it’s like, ‘Well, how far does that have to go until I’m allowed to do this?’ It [Markle] was going to end his life. It shouldn’t have to come to this. “

He also explained how he was treated by Charles.

“My dad used to tell me when I was younger… ‘Well, it was like that for me, so it’s gonna be like that for you,” the prince told Winfrey in one episode.

The father-of-two said Charles’s wait for Harry and William to agree to live under the same pressures as him “does not make sense”.

“It is not because you have suffered that your children must suffer, in fact, quite the contrary. If you have suffered, do everything you can to make sure that whatever negative experiences you have had, you can make it right. your children, ”he added.
