What Raesjon Davis’ Timely Visit Means & Ohio State Football Engagement Date: Buckeyes Recruiting

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Linebacker Raesjon Davis of Mater Dei High School in California is one of Ohio State’s final two soccer targets in the 2021 recruiting class. He will be in Columbus this weekend, as the reports Greg Biggins of 247Sports.

Three things are worth considering what this visit from the country’s No.45 player and No.4 outside linebacker means for the Buckeyes:

1. He plans to announce his decision on February 3.

2. There are 16 members of OSU’s Recruiting Class of 2021 moving to Columbus this weekend.

3. Ohio State has one linebacker in its 2021 category and three entered in 2022.

The first two facts explain why this visit is important at this time.

The visit to the former LSU engagement will be the same as others have done in the past year. Ryan Day and his coaching staff will not be involved, there will not be a tour of the Woody Hayes Athletic Facility or the Ohio Stadium, and he will not be posting photos of himself in full OSU gear. He and his family will come to Columbus and walk around campus and the surrounding area like anyone else would to get a feel for the environment he might live in for the next several years.

It’s the same route the 2022 tight winger Bennett Christian took before picking the Buckeyes in September. Defensive end Jack Sawyer served as a tour guide when he invited his 2021 colleague to spend a weekend in Columbus in October for the Buckeye Bash.

It’s no coincidence that Davis’ trip falls on a weekend when potential classmates will be calling the OSU campus. These kids are smart, which is why when news of the visit broke, some of them reacted publicly.

The recruiting dead period prohibits coaches from being involved in person, but there is no indication that a player cannot run into Davis. Sawyer lives 15 minutes from campus, so he will have plenty of time to do his part to make sure that the next time Davis comes to Columbus, it will be permanent. Wide five-star receiver Emeka Egbuka hinted he arrived on Wednesday evening so expect him to be involved. Others will surely join them.

Ohio State has been on both sides of a player who needs to see campus before making up his mind. Egbuka was sold on OSU but also wanted to see Oklahoma. For Davis, the Buckeyes believe they have the last word.

Then there is how this decision might affect future classes.

Reid Carrico is the lone linebacker in 2021, but post coach Al Washington added three in 2022 with CJ Hicks, Dasan McCullough and Gabe Powers. All four are top 100 rookies with Ohio roots.

Adding a fourth to the 2022 class was always a possibility due to the potential for early degrees. But Davis’ commitment would help balance the classes in the linebacker hall.

Davis joins five-star defensive end JT Tuimoloau as the Buckeyes’ latest likely additions to a class that ranks second in the country. Tuimoloau’s decision does not have a specific timeline, but Davis has made his intentions clear.

He’s ready to commit somewhere on February 3. The state of Ohio will once again rely on the power of peer recruiting to help it succeed.
