The Floridians, Georgians and Carolinians fled the Atlantic coast on Monday in droves when Hurricane Dorian swept their direction and the officials brought the storm back to a category 4 still dangerous.
"The window to prepare closes" tweeted Peter Gaynor, acting director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. "If you are on the east coast of Florida, finish the preparation and evacuate if the local authorities ask you. Do not worry, get out!
FEMA encouraged those on the coast to expect extreme winds and evacuate their vehicles if necessary.
Mandatory evacuation orders were in place for coastal communities in 11 counties of Florida, which make up almost the entire Atlantic coast of that state.
The governor of South Carolina, Henry McMaster, ordered Sunday the evacuation of the entire coastline of his state. The order, entered into force Monday noon, concerns 830 000 people.
Georgian governor Brian Kemp ordered evacuations for his state's coasts, also effective Monday at noon.
Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina all declared the state of emergency before the potential landing.
The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida closed at noon, with officials warning people to stay away.
"Do not forget that the airport is not a shelter," read in a statement posted on his Twitter account. "The airport will reopen when it will be safe to do so for our employees and our passengers."
Daytona Beach International Airport in Florida has also announced closures starting at 6:00 pm.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami announced Monday morning that the maximum sustained winds of Dorian were 155 km / h, resulting in an extremely dangerous storm in category 5. Gusts reached a record 225 mph on Sunday.
Sustained winds dropped to 145 mph Monday night, but the storm is expected to plague the Bahamas until Tuesday morning. Experts predicted that the eye would hover "dangerously close" to the east coast of Florida, where it is expected to be swirling until Wednesday.
Climbing at just 1 mph, the storm is expected to head north during the week as it weakens but could still cause torrential rains and flooding in coastal areas.
"At present, the transition is slowly starting on a more northwesterly trajectory," said Alan Reppert, Senior Meteorologist at AccuWeather. "We expect this Tuesday morning that the movement is moving almost north, parallel to the coast of central Florida and the outskirts of the Carolinas."
Reppert said he was expecting Dorian to return to the Atlantic before landing in North Carolina on Thursday night or Friday morning.
"We are examining [the hurricane] land on the outer shores of North Carolina, "he said. "This field will probably be the most affected in the United States."
Reppert predicted that Dorian would be in Category 1 by the time he reached North Carolina.
"We are looking at it and predict that it will weaken slowly as it moves along the coast," he said.
"But it's still a hurricane. It can cause wind gusts of more than 80 to 90 miles at the time in addition to some coastal flooding. We are not yet at the end of our sentences for North Carolina or anyone on the American coast. "
North Carolina officials say that they expect unless there is rain or flooding from Dorian compared to last year's hurricane Florence, accused of 45 deaths and causing $ 22 billion in damage.

The city of New York can expect about half a inch of rain this weekend and gusts of 20 to 30 mph, he said.

By Monday night, Dorian was creating a strong storm surge along the Florida coast, including showers, thunderstorms, and rough seas.
"On the coast, though, going through Florida and the northeast, we're seeing tear currents and stronger currents," said Reppert.
