With a few exceptions, new generations of game consoles are designed so that nothing from the old system works with the new console.
PlayStation 3 games do not work on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Wii U games do not work on Nintendo Switch. This is the way most modern gaming consoles work – with the exception of the Xbox One.
Instead, Microsoft has turned its Xbox Live subscription service into a kind of persistent digital library. If you have Xbox 360 digital games and these games are supported on Xbox One, you will automatically have them on your new console when you sign in to your Xbox Live account.
This set an important precedent: console owners are now waiting for their digital purchases to be postponed as they would on smartphones.
But Sony has never really assimilated this idea, and this remains an important distinction between Sony and Microsoft consoles. With the PlayStation 5, Sony has the opportunity to remedy this oversight – and it must, because Microsoft is likely to claim this persistence as a key feature of its platform.
Plus, with nearly 100 million PlayStation 4 consoles in the wild, this decision has a much wider impact than most others.
