After using their first-round pick against a college first-baseman who hit hard on Monday night, the White Sox started in the second round.
They passed No. 45 in the repechage on Matthew Thompson, a right handed shooter from Cypress Ranch High School in Texas.
Here is what MLB Pipeline had to say about Thompson:
Thompson announced his presence by reaching 95 mph as a rising junior at the World Wood Bat Association World Championship in 2017 and remains one of the toughest pitchers in this year's preparatory class, though he was inconsistent this spring.
"Thompson has a super-fast arm and athletic performance that produces fast bales at low speeds with a top speed of 100 km / h when he's at his best, although he's also worked at 89-90 at times of This year he has a lot of life, but his slot machine three-quarters of the arm gives him a nice advantage, but his ball can give him sometimes a second throw more, even if it was not as reliable this spring than in the past, it flattens in more than one slider when it does not stay on it.
"Although Thompson is in a rudimentary phase, he will promise to cheat and sink, and he needs to refine his control and command to reach his potential as star No. 3. Goss and he are the best rookies of Texas A & M & # 39; s 2019 class. "
