The Penguins and Maple Leafs came together for another pretty big deal today, with Jared McCann heading to Toronto in exchange for prospect FIlip Hallander. There were clear expansion plan considerations, here is a sample of the reaction around the internet from various voices of interest and note:

Hextall probably thought McCann was gone in the expansion draft. He can protect Carter and / or Blueger now. Hallander could be ready for next season (but probably not). He’s 21, so sooner or never.
This opens up a potential ceiling space to retain the ZAR.

Ultimately, the Penguins are essentially going to lose two players to the expansion draft (McCann and the one Seattle takes) instead of just letting Seattle take one of your fourth liners that would have been easy to replace. We have the impression that they are finished.

McCann played junior hockey with the OHL Soo Greyhounds. Toronto general manager Kyle Dubas is from there, as are a host of others now with the Maple Leafs:

Amirov was the 15th pick overall last year, which Pittsburgh could have done. These are two deals done by two different CEOs for Pens, but it’s interesting to look back one year and see how the assets have flowed organizationally.
The other good news for the Pens is at least that they have recovered Filip Hallander, a center prospect for a talent pool that previously had no centers with reasonable chances in the NHL. So this is not trivial today, even if it does not really enter into the overall equation.
Navigating the expansion is the first step in the offseason, and you can’t judge a haircut in the middle, so we’ll see what happens in the next steps. The Pens certainly have work at the back to find a way to strengthen their NHL squad for next season, they’re not usually the team that trades the top NHL player in a deal.
