What to do if you can’t make Android Auto calls

Earlier this year, a bug interrupted phone calls from Google Assistant in Android Auto after updating users to Android 11. Google fixed the issue shortly after with a system update, but the bug still appears for some users even after installing the fix. Fortunately, there finally seems to be a solution. According to a post on the Google Support Forums, the issue is caused by misconfigured app permissions, at least for some users.

It’s easy to fix the persistent Android Auto phone call bug, but first you need to confirm that you are using the latest version of Android and Android Auto, just in case. On your phone, go to Settings> System> Advanced> System update. Tap “Check for updates” then run the installation if a fix is ​​available. Then check if there is a new version of the Android Auto app available.

Likewise, if you are using Android Auto through a touchscreen in your car, be sure to update your vehicle’s firmware as well. Updating your car’s firmware depends on its make and model, but the steps should be readily available on the manufacturer’s support page.

If everything is up to date but Google Assistant calls still don’t work in Android Auto, try this:

  1. When using Android Auto, ask Google Assistant to start a phone call or tap the “Phone” icon. Don’t do this while driving, of course.
  2. A pop-up will appear on your Android device (or your car’s touchscreen) asking which app you want to use for the phone call. Select your phone’s app, then tap “Always” when prompted. Make sure you touch “Always,” and not “Just one time” otherwise you will have to repeat the steps.
