What to expect from Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked in August

If you’re a huge Samsung fan, you’ve probably already marked your calendar for August 11, when the company will host its next Galaxy Unpacked event. Although he held many events already in 2021, at least this time, it is an event that we expected. In recent years, Samsung has unveiled new Note phones in August. But during this unpacked coming, the company will not show a new note. Thanks to the enterprising rumor mill and, finally, Samsung itself, we’ve got a good idea of what to expect next Wednesday.

Foldable: the third generation

The company published a blog post last month in which its chairman TM Roh announced what was to come. First of all: the foldables. Yes, it is in the plural. We will see the third generation of the Galaxy Z series, including the upcoming Z Flip and Z Fold. If you remember, the Z Flip is the smaller Moto Razr style phone that looks like a regular phone that you can snap in half. Meanwhile, the Z Fold is more of a tablet-phone hybrid, where a 6.2-inch device opens up to reveal a 7.6-inch display.

What could Samsung bring in the new versions of these devices? Based on floating leaks On the internet, the Z Flip 3 might have a 1.9-inch outer display with an internal 6.7-inch flexible display. This outer panel is significantly larger than the 1.1-inch ribbon on the old Z Flip, which might make it more useful when the device is closed. We’ve also seen reports that the interior display will run at 120Hz and sport dual 12-megapixel rear cameras and a 10-megapixel selfie shooter.

Meanwhile, the Z Fold 3 is rumor have a configuration similar to the existing model, with a 6.2-inch outer panel and a 7.6-inch version on the inside. It will likely have 12-megapixel triple cameras and two selfie cameras on either side. Both models would be rated IPX8 for water resistance, although dust resistance clearly remains a challenge. These are all guesses based on what was disclosed, so I’ll take the details with a grain of salt.

What possesses confirmed is that the foldables will support Samsung’s S Pen. The stylus has been a feature of the Note series, and the company allowed support on its flagship S series earlier this year. In his blog post, Roh said the S Pen is designed specifically for its foldables.

A stylus designed for foldable over foldable displays has been a widely requested feature and would make larger and open screens more useful. Of course, Samsung hasn’t shared much else about this S Pen other than the fact that it’s coming, so there are a lot of unknowns at the moment. How will it avoid damaging the softer and more flexible screen? How big is its feather, how sensitive is it to pressure and will the folds have built-in slots to house it? Will it be bluetooth compatible for remote control actions? Obviously, these are things we’ll have to wait until Unpacked on August 11 to find out more.

Wearables: new Wear OS headphones and watches

Samsung has also already spilled the beans on its upcoming Galaxy Watch running the new Wear operating system it co-designed with Google. We’ve also seen plenty of leaked renders of the purported Galaxy Watch 4, which will likely be available in an Active and Classic edition. The latter could be available in three sizes instead of just two, and appears to feature the popular rotating bezel that Samsung watches are known for. Expect to see more hardware and UI details on Unpacked, in addition to pricing and availability.

This is not the only laptop that will make its appearance. We have also seen leaks indicating that new Galaxy Buds 2 may appear in Unpacked. The company’s next wireless headphones appear to have a more refined design and more color options. A report based on a beta of an upcoming plugin on Samsung’s update server also indicated the possibility of active noise cancellation, touch controls, and a streamlined battery interface.

That’s about all we know so far, although I wouldn’t say Samsung has anything else tucked up its sleeve for the event. Will Blackpink appear? I wish. But when it comes to the actual hardware, that’s already a pretty long list of things to plan for August 11. Samsung’s launch kicks off at 10:00 a.m. EST that day, and you should come watch it with us on Engadget’s YouTube channel. We’ll start at 9:40 a.m. EST with a pre-show and hang out past Samsung to answer your burning questions. Hope to see you then!
