What to expect from Tesla’s AI day slated for August 19

Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) is scheduled to host its AI Day on August 19, and the electric vehicle maker began sending out invitations for the event last week.

Is AI Day an extension of Autonomy Day? The Tesla AI event will more likely be the second edition of “Autonomy Day”, given that autonomy is the main application of AI within Tesla, said Gene Munster, partner. director of Loup Funds, in a note.

Despite CEO Elon Musk’s ambitious goal of achieving full autonomy by the end of 2021, Munster said 2025 could be the first year of public availability of Level 4 autonomy.

The private RSVP invitation for AI Day suggests that the event will showcase the company’s AI use cases beyond its fleet of vehicles, Munster noted.

According to the analyst, this echoes Musk’s comments during the Q1 earnings call that, in the long run, people will start to see Tesla as an ‘AI robotics’ company as much as a business. automotive or energy company.

2 notable changes since Independence Day 2019: Tesla announced in May that its Model 3 and Y vehicles would no longer rely on radar and instead use camera vision and neural network processing to provide autopilot, autonomous driving and some active safety features, Munster noted. .
Unlike other automakers, Tesla does not use lidar, the analyst said.

Second, Tesla announced in July a change in the price of FSD subscriptions, from $ 10,000 upfront to $ 200 per month, or $ 99 for cars that have already advanced Autopilot, the analyst noted.

“By 2031, we believe that FSD alone could generate up to $ 159 billion in revenue and $ 102 billion in operating profits,” Munster said.

Dojo update coming soon? Tesla will likely give updates on its Dojo supercomputer, Munster said.

“Dojo is still in development and will eventually replace Tesla’s existing supercomputer, which is used to train the neural networks that power software for the autopilot and FSD,” the analyst wrote in the note.

The analyst also noted Musk’s comments that he will eventually make Dojo available to other companies who wish to use it to train their neural networks.

Leverage AI to enter new markets: Tesla is likely to expand AI applications outside of fully autonomous driving, the analyst said.

This aligns with Tesla’s broader strategy of leveraging the software and hardware expertise it has acquired within the automotive industry to enter new markets including battery storage, HVAC, insurance and trucking logistics, he added.

Tesla shares closed Friday’s session down 2.17% to $ 699.10 but not before gaining 1.7% for the week.
