COLUMBUS, Ohio – The country’s top cornerback, Domani Jackson of Mater Dei High School in Calif., Is ready to commit.
The nation’s No.3 player has announced he will announce his engagement on Jan.23, choosing from a top-six that includes the Buckeyes, Arizona State, Clemson, Michigan, Oklahoma and USC.
California won’t start their high school football season until Jan. 8, so Jackson has spent the last six months preparing for it while going through his recruiting process.
There was a time when it looked like Ohio State was going to land the nation’s No.1 cornerback for the second time. When OSU signed up, Dasan McCollough began tweeting about a potential big month in November, Jackson was among the five-star rookies who joined in the social media fun that sent fans into a frenzy.
“If we’re all really going, it’ll be a hell of a lesson,” Jackson told cleveland.com. “It’s kind of like a great team in college, you know. That’s what we want to bring to the table if we all contribute to this. “
Ohio state ended up landing commitments from 2022 QB Quinn Ewers and wide receiver Caleb Burton weeks later. Things calmed down until five-star cornerback Jaheim Singletary became the 10th highest-ranked member of the class on January 2.
The buzz has finally died down a bit. When Amani Winfield signed up for Texas on the same day Steve Sarkisian officially became head coach, it was less than eight hours after Sarkisian crowned his time as Alabama offensive coordinator with a 52 -24 over the state of Ohio. Jackson could be the next big name that ends up elsewhere than Columbus.
All but one of his six Crystal Balls predicted engagement with the USC Trojans, with four submitted on Thursday. With Singletary already in the fold, the Buckeyes have found the kind of defensive back Kerry Coombs needs to continue a high school overhaul. He’d like to add another – all but one of the five-star cornerbacks in 2022 have OSU offers.
USC has watched the Powers raiding its talented backyard during multiple recruiting rounds. The state of Ohio also succeeded, landing Wyatt Davis, Chris Olave, Kourt Williams and CJ Stroud.
The Trojans began building walls in 2021 by convincing Korey Foreman – the country’s best player – to stay home after disengaging from Clemson. Potentially, getting Jackson to do the same is another step in the right direction for Clay Helton and his coaching staff.
