COLUMBUS, Ohio – Quinn Ewers hasn’t been on the Ohio State campus for a long time since skipping his senior year at Southlake Carroll High School in Texas.
The Buckeyes’ former 2022 quarterback signing with a Perfect Rating came early to capitalize on name, image and likeness deals while getting a head start on his development. So far he has had its ups and downs like any freshman.
“I think he would tell you that it was difficult for him to get into this adventure in the preseason and then be out for a little while,” said head coach Ryan Day. “We’re trying to get as much information from him as we can, but there’s a lot of catching up to be done there.”
Ewers was the best player in the 2022 class before taking first place in 2021 by upgrading. He showed up halfway through training camp and immediately had to run out of time for an undisclosed injury. There weren’t any real expectations for him to play this season, but the injury pushed him even further.
Day said during fall camp that they would take things slow, joking that the first week was more about showing him where everything was rather than learning the playbook. He hasn’t lost his temper yet. black band.
“We’re just going to take one day at a time and see how everyone works in this room,” Day said in August. “Overall, the quarterbacks have made good progress this year. Jack and Kyle both grew up. We will see how things move.
Ewers has since returned from training. As quarterback CJ Stroud goes through his growing pains as a first-year starter, Ewers is doing the same behind the scenes in training. Its task comes with its own rise.
Unlike Stroud, Kyle McCord and Jack Miller, Ewers doesn’t start his process in January with winter practices and 15 spring practices to acclimatize to college football. He tries to do some off-season work during the regular season while the Buckeyes get ready for games.
He has some pitching opportunities in practice, but they’re minimal in favor of giving reps to the three guys who have been here. Ewers are not the priority, although that will surely change in January. He wasn’t on the travel list for the first road game against Minnesota, and that probably won’t change in the future.
For now, it will be in the background and will continue to serve as a sight to see during the home warm-ups.
“He’s working on it, but once we get into the season it’s really hard to catch up and get those reps because we have to have reps from the guys playing in the game,” Day said. “He’s going to get a few reps (and) he’ll get some today.” But I can’t sit here and tell you that he has enough reps to be able to prepare to play in a game right now. It’s really impossible once you’re in the season to give someone reps when these other guys need as many reps as possible just to be able to play in games.
“We’re trying to find ways to bring him a few things after training and work on it individually.”
