Netflix’s Marketing Department is delighted to let you know that the streaming service will debut at least one new movie every week in 2021. Perhaps this is an attempt to distract from the fact that, Warner Bros., Disney and NBC Universal, etc. all have their own streaming services (HBO Max, Disney +, Peacock), Netflix’s list of non-original content is shrinking month by month.

So, if it’s not the recent blockbusters that appeal to you, what will you get for your subscription dollars in February? The biggest win of the month is Malcom and Marie (February 5), an animated film starring Zendaya (just after her Emmy win for Best Actress for HBO Euphoria) and John David Washington and written and directed by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson. Netflix paid north of $ 30 million for the film after starting a bidding war following its (virtual) premiere at the 2020 Toronto Film Festival. Netflix hopes the small-scale story of two actors who return home after their film’s premiere to wait for the critical reviews grab the attention of notoriously egotistical industry voters.

If you’re not in the mood for the black and white solipsistic navel, there’s To All the boys: always and forever (February 12), the third entry in the epic YA rom-com trilogy that began with To all the boys that I’ve loved before. Next week, Rosamund Pike and Dianne Wiest face off in elder abuse thriller I care a lot (February 19) is the first time anyone has directed a thriller about elder abuse.

Here’s everything else to come (and leave) Netflix in February 2021.
