(Reuters) – Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp said on Thursday it would continue its controversial privacy policy update, but allow users to read it at “their own pace” and also display a banner providing information additional.
In January, the messaging platform informed users that it was preparing a new privacy policy, under which it could share limited user data with Facebook and its group companies.
This sparked a global uproar and sent users to rival apps Telegram and Signal, among others, prompting WhatsApp to delay the launch of the new policy in May and to clarify that the update was aimed at allowing users to communicate with businesses and would not affect personal conversations.
In India, the largest user base for the messaging app, Facebook executives responded to questions from a parliamentary panel on the need for the changes, days after the country’s technology ministry asked the messaging platform to remove them.
In its latest blog bit.ly/3ufc9Eq, WhatsApp said it would start reminding users to check out and accept updates to continue using the messaging platform.
“We have also included more information to try and address the concerns we are hearing,” he added.
WhatsApp’s announcement comes as Facebook, a parent, decided to block all news content in Australia on Thursday amid backlash from editors and politicians, prompting a top UK lawmaker to call the move an attempt. to intimidate a democracy.
