WhatsApp chats already have end-to-end encryption, but what about your online backups? They will soon be covered too. As The edge Notes, WABetaInfo discovered that the latest beta of WhatsApp for Android (2.21.15.5) includes a test for end-to-end encrypted cloud backups. Sign up and you don’t have to worry about hackers or spies easily reading your chat history.
There are a few caveats. You will need to create a separate password to restore your backups, and you will not be able to recover them if you lose your phone and forget this password. You can alternatively create a 64-digit encryption key, but you will also have problems if you lose this key.
It’s not certain that WhatsApp will roll out secure cloud backups with the next stable release, so you might not want to rely on it in the near future. It’s also not clear if everyone using the new beta gets the same backup functionality.
The timing is right, at least. WhatsApp has just started testing multi-device sync which is not dependent on a phone connection. These encrypted backups don’t seem to be available on all devices, but they could be reassuring as people increasingly rely on WhatsApp for chats on all their gadgets.
