‘Wheel of Fortune’ contestant loses technicality, viewers blow up ‘moronic’ rule

Fans are once again disappointed with “Wheel of Fortune”. This time, it is on a technicality which led a player to lose even after giving a correct answer.

In Wednesday’s episode, David Pederson had roughly solved the daily crossword puzzle, which consisted of four words in the “Catch of the Day” category. Pederson only had two letters to completely complete the puzzle, so he chose to solve it.

“Don’t add anything,” warned host Pat Sajak Pederson, who then provided “Sole, plaice, cod and catfish” as his latest guess. But, because he added the word “and” in the word list, the answer was declared incorrect. Competitor Danielle Williams then answered correctly by listing the same fish but without saying “and”.

“I thought that was what you said,” Williams remarked to Pederson, to which Sajak responded by reiterating the rule that “and” cannot be part of the answer.

Naturally, Pederson seemed disappointed – and he wasn’t the only one. People quickly took to her defense on Twitter, scoffing at the rule that once again created unnecessary loss.

Then again, these were outliers that had little liking for Pederson to be tripped over by the rule. “Rules are rules”, one user tweeted. “They all know the rule and [Pat Sajak] even reminds them when they resolve to “add nothing”.

This isn’t the first time the rule has bitten a competitor, and it’s not the first time “Wheel of Fortune” has come under scrutiny.

In February, fans were disappointed when ABC aired an episode of “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” in which former “The Bachelor” host Chris Harrison was a contestant. Although the episode was filmed in December, it ran after Chris Harrison withdrew from “The Bachelor” for comments insensitive to racism.
