The “Saints” are not yet working.
After being postponed due to concerns about COVID-19, the highly anticipated “The Many Saints of Newark” is set to finally open on September 24, 2021 – nearly a year after its initial scheduled release date.
The prequel “The Sopranos,” which is produced by New Line Cinemas and released by Warner Bros., was originally scheduled to hit theaters and streaming services in September 2020, Variety reported.
The mafia film created by David Chase was then postponed until this spring due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Billed as the origin story of popular HBO drama – which ran from 1999-2007 – “The Many Saints of Newark” follows the DiMeo crime family as they compete with rival factions on the ravaged streets by the riots in Newark, New Jersey, in the 1960s.
Young Tony Soprano will be aptly played by Michael Gandolfini, the lookalike son of the late James Gandolfini, who played the adult soprano in the iconic HBO series. The actor, 21, revealed last year that he never even watched his father’s legendary show until he was cast in the prequel.
The all-star cast also includes Leslie Odom Jr. of “Hamilton” fame, Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Alessandro Nivola, Billy Magnussen, John Magaro, Michela De Rossi, Ray Liotta and Vera Farmiga.
“The Many Saints of Newark” will be released simultaneously in theaters and on the HBO Max streaming service.
