When will they receive the vaccine?

NORTH SALT LAKE, Utah – As demand for the COVID-19 vaccine exceeds supply in Utah, younger people at risk of serious illness from the coronavirus don’t know when to get vaccinated.

Three hundred and twenty days.

“Honestly, I hate it,” Kaytlin Beckett said.

This is how long Kaytlin self-isolated during the pandemic.

“It’s not good for your mental health. Cancer isn’t good for your mental health, but like, it’s not good for your mental health, ”Kaytlin said.

Doctors diagnosed the 35-year-old lawyer with leukemia a month before the pandemic.

“I was talking to my doctor after the pandemic broke and he said, ‘All we know is that your ability to make antibodies is almost nonexistent.’ My immune system is not working to the same capacity as other people, ”Kaytlin said.

Her particular cancer cannot be cured, only managed. COVID-19 is almost guaranteed to put her in hospital.

Still, the current rollout of the vaccine in Utah could make her wait months.

“At this point, there just isn’t enough vaccine to circulate,” Utah Department of Health spokesperson Charla Haley said.

Utah’s vaccination plan prioritizes people with obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and COPD, but it’s unclear when they can line up.

People with cancer, pregnant women, or those with compromised immunity are not on the list.

“I think there will be a plan in place before the vaccine is available, if that makes sense. It all depends on the availability of the vaccine and how quickly it is delivered to us, ”Haley said.

After completing vaccinations for people 70 and older, the state announced it would move to people 65 and older and then to people with co-morbidities.

Yet at present, the state does not have enough to finish off the oldest group.

“I just want to know when, right?” When. When can people in my place have access to this vaccine? Kaytlin said.

It will be up to the COVID Unified Command, the Ministry of Health and the Governor’s Office to decide what other conditions are eligible for an early vaccine. It is not known when this decision will be made.
