Stimulus check or junk mail? Know what to look for so you don’t throw your money away.

The IRS has started sending a second stimulus check in the mail. If you be eligible for another direct payment – and you can calculate the total of your second stimulation test here – then there is three ways you might receive it. If you haven’t already direct deposit set up with IRS, it means you receive a paper check or EIP card in the mail.

Although the second stimulus controls arrive faster this time, there is also a catch: a January 15 deadline to receive your check. If you don’t get your payment in the mail by then, you’ll need to file a claim during tax season in order to get your money back. It’s called a Recovery rebate credit, and this can slow down your schedule to get your next check. There is also another thing to know. It may not be clear that the envelope with your money contains a check (the IRS tweeted this during the first round). This is to deter fraud and theft.

Fortunately, the US Postal Service has a free app that can help you track where your second stimulus check or the EIP card is and when exactly it could arrive. This way, you’ll know exactly what to look for and when it arrives, so you don’t accidentally throw it in the trash thinking it’s junk mail.

Informed delivery: quickly check that you can register

When the USPS passes the mail through its automated mail sorting equipment, it creates a digital image of the front of all letter-size mail, including your dunning check. The informed delivery program uses this digitally captured information to notify you when every piece of mail is in transit.

The service is available for many residential and personal PO Box addresses, but not for businesses. This will also not work for some multi-unit buildings where the Postal Service has not yet identified each unit.

Here’s how to check if it’s available in your area:

1. Go to the Postal Service informed delivery page and press the Free registration button.

2. Enter your postal address and press Continue.

If the service is available, then you can create an account.
