I promised this title, so here it is: Where are you going, Bernadette? Richard Linklater's comedy starring Cate Blanchett, based on a hit book, reported only $ 3.4 million this weekend. It's the lowest opening of Linklater, it's pretty low for Blanchett, who has won an Oscar twice.
Linklater's work is made up of independent films, but for a large-scale independent film, "Bernadette" is a disaster. It's a disaster we knew to come, though. Originally scheduled for last winter, "Bernadette" took place and would have been modified. But the damage was done.
Rotten tomatoes at 43%. The Annapurna Pictures, who can not get out of their own way, stealthily walked to the city center. Their release date for a Blanchett-Linklater movie in August signaled to anyone caring that it was not a festival or prestige film. "Bernadette" was dropped.
Annapurna's other recent failure, "Booksmart," brought in $ 22 million. "Bernadette" will not go that far. Annapurna, now released as United Artists Releasing, released four films this year for a total of $ 104 million. They are waiting, I suppose, the MGM James Bond movie, scheduled for next spring. But at that time, their staplers will be empty and they will have to keep the ear memos without paperclips.
Could Bernadette have been saved? A hail pass Mary could bring to Toronto, and launching Cate in a thin crowd (so far) better actresses made a big deal at the Gotham Awards (where Cate and Richard would have been hailed as heroes) . But Annapurna is without advertising or marketing. No effort was better than anything else, I suppose.
