BRADENTON, Fla – The Concession Golf Club is considered one of the toughest courses in the state, earning the nickname “Concussion” by its members for the punishment it can inflict on everyday enthusiasts.
But the best PGA Tour players in the world haven’t been beaten too much – at least not yet.
The average second round score on Friday at the WGC-Workday Championship was more than a shot below par (70,877). On a day with abundant sunshine, high humidity and light wind, there were two rounds of 64. Nine players started with consecutive rounds in the 60s. Brooks Koepka leads the event to 11 under 133, with eight other players within three shots.
Of course, there were a few explosions in two rounds, with 64 double bogeys and 14 more. But there wasn’t the carnage many expected when the WGC moved here from Chapultepec Golf Club due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“I have to hand it over to our settlement staff; they did a really good job of setting up the golf course, of not making us look stupid, ”said Billy Horschel, who is a 10-under shot back.

Horschel said he had breakfast on Friday morning with PGA Tour rules manager Gary Young and started discussing the course.
Horschel said: “He was like, ‘This course is a test in itself; you don’t have to place silly hole locations and be too tight with hole locations and you don’t have to get the greens too fast or too firm to make it difficult. ”
Young told Horschel that franchise superintendent Terry Kennelly actually wanted this week’s Greens to be faster – this is also the sentiment of several members who have walked the course, perhaps keen to see the best in the world suffer as much as they do – but the Tour said they were doing well in the 12 lineup on the Stimpmeter.
“Gary was like, ‘No, they’re fine where they are. We don’t need to get them 13 or 13 and over because you are limiting your hole locations here, ”said Horschel. “There is so much slope on these greens. It’s like Augusta – there are only a limited number of hole locations on each green, so you have to watch out for green speeds.
