Where Wolverines, Big Ten teams rank in the top 25 APs

Michigan football was not among the top 25 teams in the AP poll released Tuesday. Here’s a breakdown of where UM and other Big Ten teams rank.

It only took a week for the chaos to spread through the PA’s Top 25. Eight ranked teams lost in week 1. This is in part due to the fact that there were five clashes between the AP Top 25 ranked teams.

However, No.10 from North Carolina, No.16 from LSU and No.20 from Washington all lost to unranked opponents. North Carolina and LSU at least have the excuse of losing to quality opponents on the road at Virginia Tech and UCLA, respectively.

Washington lost to foe FCS Montana at home and scored just seven points in the process. The Huskies became the first ranked team to lose their season opener to an FCS opponent from Iowa in 2016. Washington will look to bounce back against Michigan football on Saturday night.

Michigan football remains unranked despite earning a spot in the votes received section 32-31. The Wolverines will miss out on the opportunity to claim a victory over a PA Top 25 team after losing Washington.

Michigan football’s path to the AP Top 25

However, Wolverines’ path to getting into the leaderboard is pretty straightforward. If Michigan beats Washington, then they will have two winnable home games against Northern Illinois and Rutgers. If Michigan football takes care of home affairs, it will head to Wisconsin at 4-0.

It’s reasonable to assume that UM will move up six (or more) places in the rankings by then.

Speaking of Wisconsin, this was one of the ranked teams to lose last week. The Badgers fell to Penn State 16-10 in a defensive slugfest. Wisconsin dropped six spots to No.18 while the Nittany Lions gained eight spots to No.11.

As with the other Big Ten teams, Ohio State earned a spot at No.3 after Oklahoma’s close call with Tulane. Iowa moved up eight spots to place 10th after beating Indiana 34-6.

The Hoosiers went from # 17 to # 33 in the voting section. One place behind the Hoosiers is the state of Michigan. The Spartans got a few votes, which comes in at No. 34 after receiving no votes in the preseason polls.
