In Alabama, the number of families who choose not to vaccinate their children is relatively small. But families who choose not to participate tend to place their children in private schools where vaccination rates can be considerably lower than those of an Alabama school.
This month, AL.com has received from the Alabama Department of Public Health data on medical and religious immunization exemptions granted to schools in Alabama. More than 1,500 schools in Alabama responded to the voluntary survey.
You can search your school in the database by clicking on this link.
Most schools with potentially low vaccination rates are private. The 19 schools with the highest exemption rates are all private schools.
Compare the rates of the top five private schools by the exemption rate compared to the top five public schools.
ADPH data also included numbers on vaccination certificates, also known as blue leaflets. These are recordings collected by the school that confirm that a student has been vaccinated.
According to ADPH, several schools in Alabama – most of which are public – have a high number of missing certificates.
