While Hurricane Dorian began ravaging the coast of South Carolina earlier today, dozens of American Red Cross shelters are available to residents.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the major storm is expected to result in a potentially deadly storm surge and coastal flooding.

The Red Cross opened the evacuation shelters in partnership with the emergency management departments and the S.C. Department of Social Services.

Officials advised residents to be cautious in the event of a storm when heading to shelters.

"Please consider the instructions of the emergency officials, the displacements will become a treachery," said Ben Williamson, spokesman for the Palmetto Red Cross (SC) region.

Residents who evacuate are encouraged to bring the following essential elements for each person:

  • Pillows and blankets.
  • Prescriptions and emergency drugs.
  • Foods that meet unusual dietary requirements.
  • Hygiene products and other comfort items.
  • Supplies needed for children and infants, such as diapers, formula and toys.
  • Special items for elderly or disabled family members.
  • Chargers for electronic devices.
