DETROIT – “White Boy Rick” Wershe, who spent 30 years in prison for drug trafficking while working as a police informant, filed a lawsuit Tuesday for $ 100 million, claiming his constitutional rights were violated when ‘he had been coerced into helping police as a teenager, The Associated Press reports.
Richard Wershe Jr., 52, of Detroit, filed a lawsuit in federal court alleging his legal problems in the 1980s stemmed from pressure to please local police and FBI agents who used him as an informant and repeatedly sent him to drug dens, AP reports. . His lawyer, Nabih Ayad, acknowledged that those interviewed named in the lawsuit could argue that Wershe’s constitutional claims are too old to be taken to court, but have sought justice regardless, AP reports.
Wershe was released from the Michigan prison system in 2017 and transferred to Florida where he spent a few more years in prison for an unrelated crime. He has been free for a year, since July 20, 2020.
The 2018 film “White Boy Rick”, starring Matthew McConaughey and Richie Merritt, was inspired by Wershe’s entanglement with law enforcement, crime, and the jail time that followed.
