White Sox choose Andrew Vaughn

Award-winning White Sox perspective Andrew Vaughn made the opening day team list. He’s not one of Chicago’s 40 men, so the team will have to select him.

The White Sox could have gained an extra year of service time by keeping Vaughn down for the first few weeks of the season, but executive vice-president Ken Williams said last week that this wouldn’t be a motivating factor in their decision. The team were living up to their word. If Vaughn does not revert to minors, he will be controllable until 2026 and eligible for arbitration after 2023, although the White Sox can certainly extend it before that, as they have done on several occasions in recent years with offensive building blocks. such as Yoan Moncada, Tim anderson, Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert.

Chief Executive Officer Rick Hahn said on Tuesday (via James Fegan of The Athletic), “Having Andrew around will be an advantage for this attack.” The White Sox expect Vaughn to consider designated hitter, first base and left field, according to Hahn.

It became easier to imagine Vaughn making Chicago’s season opener when the club received the devastating news of Jimenez’s ruptured pectoral tendon last week. Jimenez underwent surgery on Tuesday and is at risk of missing at least five to six months, Hahn said. The hope is that Vaughn will help fill Jimenez’s huge offensive void.

Now 22, Vaughn is a former University of California star who the White Sox drafted third overall in 2019 and then signed a bonus of over $ 7.2 million. Vaughn hasn’t passed the High-A ball since then, but he’s held up in the minors, having cut .278 / .384 / .449 in 245 home plate appearances. He also looked ready for prime time this spring with a .279 / .375 / .459 line and six more hits (three doubles, two homers and a triple) in 61 at batting.

In addition to the addition of Vaughn, the White Sox made a handful of other roster moves on Tuesday. They opted for an infielder Danny mendick on their alternate site and reassigned to other players Beckham Team, Zach Remillard and Matt reynoldsacrobat Nick williams, and right-handed Ryan burr. The club also made the previously reported release of the receiver Jonathan lucroy official.
