White Sox pitcher Ryan Tepera has hinted that Houston may have stolen signs in Games 1 and 2 of their AL Division series after Chicago won Game 3 on Sunday night.
Houston was gone for a sweep after scoring a pair of impressive home wins. But they struck out 16 at bat in a 12-6 loss to Chicago after batting 16 times in the first two games.
Tepera, who worked two perfect runs on Sunday, noted the difference between the Astros at home and on the road.
“Yes. That’s how it is. They obviously have a reputation for doing sketchy stuff there,” he said. “It’s fair, you can tell it’s a bit of a difference. think you saw the swings and misses tonight from the first two games of Minute Maid. But that’s not really the story, you know? We come here to play. We are going to compete. We are not going. not worry about what they are going to do.
“All we have to do is take some shots and they can’t hit them anyway.”
The Astros were disciplined by Major League Baseball after discovering the team were using electronic devices to steal signs during their 2017 World Series title run and again in the 2018 season.
The MLB investigation found that Houston was using a video feed from a central camera to see and decode the opposing receiver’s signs during home games. Players knocked on a trash can to signal hitters what pitch was coming, believing it would improve the batter’s chances of hitting a hit.
Manager AJ Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow were sacked in the fallout, but no player was punished after MLB commissioner Rob Manfred granted them immunity as part of the the league.
Sign theft is a legal and time-honored part of baseball as long as it’s done with the naked eye – for example, by a base runner standing in second. The use of technology is prohibited.
Best-of-five Game 4 is scheduled for Monday afternoon in Chicago, but rain is forecast.
