CHICAGO – Craig Kimbrel’s return to Wrigley Field was not a positive one… at least not for the moment for his White Sox team.
Kimbrel entered the eighth inning of Friday afternoon’s 8-6 White Sox victory in 10 innings with a three-run lead and gave it to Andrew Romine’s three-run homerun. It was Romine’s first home run since 2017, and Kimbrel’s four hits in the inning were only the second time in his career. Kimbrel was traded to the Sox last Friday in exchange for second baseman Nick Madrigal and reliever Codi Heuer, who scored a scoreless ninth goal for the Cubs.
The White Sox took the win on 10th base on a two-point homerun from Brian Goodwin over Manuel Rodriguez. That explosion followed Liam Hendriks, who fanned four in 1 1/3 innings, shooting a fastball past a swinging Ian Happ with the winning run in the second and two outs in the ninth.
Lance Lynn struck out eight, walked two and allowed one run in over six innings. He was withdrawn by manager Tony La Russa after Romine’s single to start the seventh. The Cubs scored in that frame on David Bote’s sacrificial ball, but batter Patrick Wisdom’s long ball on the right against reliever Aaron Bummer with Robinson Chirinos first was caught by Goodwin to end the inning.
Kyle Hendricks started Friday’s start with an 11-0 record and 2.78 ERA in his last 15 trips to the mound. The White Sox scored their fourth inning runs on Andrew Vaughn’s cross single and Seby Zavala’s two-hit single on the right.
While Hendricks has had a positive streak, Lynn has gone 0-4 and a 6.93 ERA in his last 11 starts against the Cubs. His last win against them was on September 27, 2013 at Busch Stadium with the Cardinals and his last win at Wrigley was on July 27, 2012.
The only thing Lynn’s game lacked on Friday was an offensive element. The pitcher struck twice with two outs and bases loaded, after Hernandez was intentionally stepped in both cases to get to Lynn.
Hernandez connected when he had the chance to strike in the eighth, throwing Kyle Ryan’s first pitch for a two-run homer to center-left. The explosion came with two strikeouts, after Zavala’s nine batting shots against Trevor Megill ended with a ball on the ground on a dive from first baseman Frank Schwindel for a hit. It was the 19th home run for Hernandez this season and his 12th hitter on the right side.
