Who even uses Bing? Google, apparently – when massive fines have to be dispensed with

Gives a nice statistic, but it may not be relevant

Google claims sheer superiority over other search engines as a reason it shouldn’t pay the European Union $ 5 billion. The company is in the process of appealing the commission’s record fine of 2018, when it was determined that the online search giant was able to secure the dominance of its services over competitors through the popularity of Android devices.

So what has Google put in place for its defense in court? According to Bloomberg, it’s Microsoft’s own search engine.

“We have submitted evidence showing that by far the most common search query on Bing is Google,” said Alfonso Lamadrid, a lawyer for Google. “People use Google because they want to, not because they have to.”

Sick burning, right? While we don’t have a firm citation here, we do know that SEO analytics firm Ahrefs recorded “Google” as Bing’s top query in 2019 (via Digital Information World) and currently has the term # 3 for the year to date. with just over 8 million returns in the United States

Lamadrid also mentioned consumer surveys where 95% of respondents chose Google over the alternatives.

But here’s the problem: Any Android phone sold with Google Play services comes with the Google search engine as well as many others like Chrome, Drive, Photos, and YouTube. Do consumers have the right to choose where they get their web browser and cloud storage before moving on from their first startup?

Google faces a sizeable challenge against this principle as it fights the European Commission’s decision. Its initial reaction was to auction off preferred search engine locations for new Android phones sold in Europe.
