AAn unregistered American beat Thursday the highest ranked player in the second round of the American Open for the biggest surprise of the major tournament so far. Taylor Townsend, who had to survive several qualifying matches to even play in the main draw of the American Open, beat Simona Haslep Romania in the major tournament of the end of the tennis season.
The 23-year-old native of Chicago won 2-6, 6-3, 7-6.
After losing the first set, Townsend fought back to win the second goal before forcing a decisive third set to oust the two-time tournament champion, who happens to be the reigning Wimbledon champion.
With her victory, Townsend warned the remaining women and became the last black woman to impress her highly favored opponents in tennis. Including Naomi Osaka and Cori "Coco" Gauff, the latter took on international significance when she defeated Venus Williams at Wimbledon in London last month.

According to the WTA website, Townsend is 5 feet 7 inches tall and became a professional in 2012. The southern painter lives in Atlanta.
