The brother of Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles, Tevin Biles-Thomas, was arrested for his alleged role in a triple homicide. Simone is not in the mood to "talk" after this development, but here's what you need to know.
Update: "On December 31, 2018, many people attended a New Year's Eve party at a residence near Denison Avenue and W. 45th Street. At around 23:30, an uninvited group entered the house and an altercation ensued between uninvited guests and those invited. The altercation resulted in gunfire and multiple casualties, including three fatalities. Several participants in the party ran away. The Cleveland police immediately responded. DelVaunte Johnson, 19, and Toshaun Banks, 21, were found dead at the scene. Devaughn Gibson, 23, was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Cleveland Police Homicide Unit conducted an investigation and identified Tevin Biles-Thomas as a gunman, "said the Cleveland Police Division and the Cuyahoga County District Attorney's Office in a joint statement.
They added that the grand jury of Cuyahoga County had handed over an indictment (attached) to the following charges: 6 counts of murder for Biles-Thomas; 3 counts of willful homicide; 5 counts of criminal assault; and 1 head of perjury.
Origin: Tevin Biles-Thomas, the 24-year-old Olympic gymnast's brother Simone Biles, 22, was arrested in connection with a triple homicide in Cleveland, Ohio. According to Cleveland.com, Tevin was arrested on August 29th. He is currently detained in Liberty County Jail until the September 13 appearance of Pleas Court Court in Cuyahoga County. "The relentless persistence of Cleveland police investigators in the homicide has resulted in an indictment," said a Cuyahoga County attorney in a statement. "It is thanks to their hard work that we can begin to seek justice for these victims." While the authorities recall what happened, here is what we know about the murders and Simone's brother.
1. Tevin Biles-Thomas was charged with murder. Simone's brother was charged with murder, willful murder, assault and perjury related to a shootout at a New Year's party. The incident occurred in an apartment rented by Airbnb over a pizza shop on Denison Avenue, near Fulton Road in Cleveland, Ohio.
A fight would have broken out after a group of men showed up without being asked. They were asked to leave and, according to the police, shots followed. The victims – Devaughn Gibson23 DelVaunte Johnson, 19 and Toshon Banks, 21 – were each fired several times.
2. Tevin was born in Ohio. Like his sister, Tevin was born in "Buckeye State". They did not grow together though. When Simone was three years old, Tevin and two other siblings were placed in foster care because of their biological mother's drug and alcohol abuse, according to United States today. Simone and her younger sister, Adria, were finally adopted by their maternal grandfather and his wife. They grew up in Houston, Texas, while Tevin stayed in Ohio.
3. Tevin was on active service in the army when he was arrested. Tevin was arrested and booked in Georgia for a reason. The 24-year-old is currently on active duty in the US Army and stationed in Fort Stewart. It's also there that he was arrested.
4. After her arrest, Simone stated that she was not in the mood to "talk". As the news of Tevin Biles-Thomas' arrest was announced, Simone sent a message that she was not in the mood to talk about her brother – or anything. "Eating my feelings," she tweeted at 9:50 pm ET on Aug. 29. "Do not talk to me."
5. Up to now, he is the only one to be arrested in this case. In addition to the three deaths, a 21-year-old man was hit in the back of the head and a 23-year-old woman was shot in the arm. Both survived the shooting. Tevin is the only one to date arrested for this incident.
"The investigators from the Cleveland Police Homicide Unit have remained determined to get an arrest in this tragic case," said the Cleveland Division Chief. Calvin Williams in a report. "We appreciate our partnership with the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office and are confident that their efforts will bring justice to the families affected by this terrible incident."
