Everywhere you turn, there’s a new rumor or source regarding the status of the Texas Longhorns head coach job.
With the job status in the air over Tom Herman, many have speculated that he saw his final days as a burnt orange football program manager. It’s no secret these days that former Ohio State and Florida national championship winning coach Urban Meyer is the prime target. After accompanying Charlie Strong and Herman since 2014, it looks like Texas brass are watching the big fish.
Like it should be.
A recent report published by Orange Bloods and shared on Football Scoop indicates that the Longhorns were in Columbus to meet with Meyer. It was reported on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas that Meyer could explore options for potential staff if he accepted the Longhorns position.
Bryan Broaddus is now on the radio as part of the afternoon show “Gbag Nation” with Gavin Dawson and Jeff Cavanaugh. Broaddus recently worked on the media side with the Dallas Cowboys. Previously, he spent time in the Cowboys front office as well as the Green Bay Packers. His work came from the player staff side. Broaddus has connections in the academic ranks.
One of the barriers to Meyer’s taking on the role outside of health and family might simply be the one he took with him to Austin. He probably wants to make sure he has the best assistants around him. So who could be on this staff?
Purely speculation at this point as no one has reported any of these names.
Stan Drayton and Chris Ash are two who would likely be leftovers from Herman’s staff. Meyer had the two with him at Ohio State when they won the national championship. This year, Meyer spoke highly of Ash and called him the best offseason coordinator.
Corey Dennis is a name that comes to mind. Dennis is Meyer’s son-in-law and has developed a relationship with former clerk Quinn Ewers. It might be a way for the Longhorns to get back into the race with Ewers, it could be a long shot but it would be hard to imagine a staff without him.
Larry Johnson, the defensive line coach. Johnson spent 18 years at Penn State before moving to Ohio State in 2014 with Meyer. He developed both Joey and Nick Bosa as well as Chase Young. He would be a welcome addition to the staff if Meyer could convince Johnson to join him.
Kerry Coombs, the defensive coordinator. During his time with Meyer, Coombs was the assistant defensive coordinator with Chris Ash. Considering he has worked with Ash in the past, this might be an option. However, he is now the coordinator, so it would be hard to imagine that he would leave his post.
This is clearly a developing issue to watch out for. Especially given that Urban Meyer is on the Fox Big Noon Kickoff show. This week’s Big Noon game is the Texas Longhorns and Kansas State Wildcats.
