In what the Justice Department calls the biggest scandal of college admissions that it has ever been pursued, the federal authorities on Tuesday accused 50 people of having participated in a national program aimed at to bypass the process of admission to highly competitive schools such as Yale and the University of Southern California.

The accused are rich and powerful parents accused of paying millions of dollars in bribes; examination administrators and sports coaches accused of having accomplished the achievements of the students in manufacturing; and private admissions counselors accused of having coordinated everything.
