The famous Hollywood sign that overlooks Tinseltown briefly read “Hollyboob” on Monday. And now we know (maybe) why.

Social media influencer Julia Rose says she changed the panel to protest what she sees as Instagram’s censorship of more racy content. Police arrested Rose and five others for trespassing, and park rangers quickly restored the iconic sign to its usual status.

“It wasn’t cool (not to mention the pretty steep and dangerous terrain),” said Captain Steve Lurie, LAPD’s Hollywood area commander, tweeted on Monday.

Rose is the founder and CEO of Shag Mag, a digital publication that features “exclusive, uncensored content from Julia Rose and other upcoming Instagram models” (yes, there are plenty of boobs). In an interview with the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday, Rose said she first came up with the idea for Hollyboob last year after Instagram warned her about nudity on her personal accounts and ‘business. The accounts had about 6 million combined followers before they were deactivated, the Times reports.

Rose told the newspaper she knew she was “pushing the boundaries of censorship” on accounts by featuring other scantily dressed influencers, but believed Instagram and its parent company, Facebook, were targeting more influencers. aggressively than established brands like Playboy.

“We do not allow nudity on Instagram, and we have removed these accounts for repeatedly breaking these rules,” a spokesperson for the Facebook company said in a statement Tuesday.

Rose and fellow influencer Jack Tenney, one of her prank partners, argue that the coup had unintended benefits, like raising awareness about breast cancer and making people smile.

“It’s awesome,” Rose told the LA Times. “All of this combined has been really, really great.”

The Hollywood Sign was built in 1923 as a giant illuminated advertisement for an upscale real estate development called Hollywoodland and quickly became a tourist attraction and symbol of Hollywood glamor. He has appeared in numerous films, including Argo, Sharknado, and San Andreas, and in video games such as Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. The W on the panel, the tallest letter in the current version, is 45 feet high by almost 40 inches wide.

Access the monument at the top of Mt. Lee needs to climb some steep terrain, but the intruders have already managed to change it. In 2017, an artist changed it to read “Hollyweed”, and in 1987 it briefly changed to “Holywood” to coincide with a visit from the Pope.

Rose made the news during the 2019 World Series, when she and friends flashed their boobs to TV cameras from seats behind the marble. At the time, they also said they were raising awareness about breast cancer.

Rose and Tenney are due in court for their Hollyboob hijinks later this year.
