The San Francisco Giants have been a well-oiled and perfectly balanced machine this season. They entered Friday’s game early in the afternoon against the Chicago Cubs with the MLB’s best record, 90-50 (and improved to 91-50 after a decisive 6-1 win). But it looks like first baseman Brandon Belt would like to claim his position as the undisputed team manager of the league’s most successful club.

Belt strutted against the Cubs while sporting a badly taped “C”, even though he’s not the Giants’ team captain at all. And you know what? He played like someone who deserves the title, going 2-for-3 with a brace and a home run, his 22nd of the season.

After the match, Belt’s unofficial captain’s course was worked out. This it appears that Evan Longoria stuck the “C” on Belt’s jersey while joking at Belt’s insistence on which team he deserved the title. And then Belt … just didn’t take the tape off.

“Someone has to step in, and when you’re the dominant male on the team, it has to be you,” Belt told reporters. It’s hard to dispute this logic, although I have a feeling that the “C” sign stuck on the tape probably won’t be on Belt’s jersey for their next game.
