In 2017, the Italian eyewear giant Luxottica announced its merger with Essilor, a French lens manufacturer. The $ 49 billion merger allowed Luxottica to enter all facets of eyewear, from design through to manufacturing and retail. Although the merger has been approved by several major international trade commissions, including the FTC, some antitrust experts are questioning whether this decision will help consumers or reinforce the industry standard that glasses cost hundreds of dollars.
