Why I just bought AirPod for Amazon Prime Day when I do not need it

Confession: I bought the Apple AirPods 2019 on Amazon Prime Day, although technically I do not do it need their. After all, I have the original AirPods from late 2017.

After several reflections, I made the purchase today for several reasons. Of course, it has new features such as "Hey Siri" contactless and wireless charging. But the benefits that have made me upgrade are all minor in comparison.

Here are the three reasons why I bought new AirPods and how much I paid for them during Prime Day 2019.

1. AirPods on sale today for Amazon Prime Day

I was expecting Amazon Prime Day 2019 to buy a lot things. I mean I've rationed supplies such as trash bags, laundry detergent and even very resistant sponges – all on sale and finally bought today. I need new sunglasses, but I have not had them until today either. I saved $ 50 on supplies in the end.

This same procrastination was applied voluntarily to the "AirPods 2" with wireless charging. I did not need it right away, so paying $ 30 less for the wireless charging version 16 weeks after the initial launch made me feel very sensible.

Here's how much they are selling in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Note to the United States: I saved an extra $ 9.01 by choosing the option not rushed delivery. Amazon may be doing this for two reasons: the AirPods will become very popular today and all Amazon employees and UPS drivers will overload the shipping of everything else sold over the next two days. This gives them a break to get a popular article. For Amazon, this should be worth 9.01 USD.

The upgraded 2019 AirPods, without wireless charging, are also on sale today. They contain the "Hey Siri" non-contact function and a slightly longer battery life.

2. I sell my old AirPods while they are valuable

If I'm going to sell my AirPods, it will have to be in 2019 to have a value. Over time, the battery life will fail and the audio volume will decrease. It's good enough for someone else to enjoy it for a year or two (probably a family member as I would not want to overload a stranger for something that has a lifespan limited).

I am a strong supporter of the elimination of old technology to finance the purchase of new gadgets. This is how to finance the purchase of the iPhone XS Max, the Apple Watch 3 and the MacBook Pro. Advice: Get rid of things while they still have value attached to them.

3. Updated battery life is the main reason

My current AirPods of 2017 still last about four hours between refills, which is always impressive, in my opinion. It's longer than other people I've talked to who have talked about battery life issues.

Having a renewed battery with a five hour battery life will give me exactly what I need for longer flights across the country. A member of my family will find four hours, and possibly three hours, perfectly fine.

Other smaller reasons, I bought AirPods

  • I'm using more and more wireless charging since the launch of the iPhone 8. It's nice to just drop it on a Qi charging mat and forget about it without having to plug in a cable. lighting in the case of the AirPods.
  • I do not expect the official "AirPods 2" to be launched next year – at best. The moment is therefore propitious to acquire the second-generation AirPod. At their first big sale, but not quite at the release date of the AirPods 2.
  • I imagine that the feature "Hey Siri" is useful in New York. The microphone of the AirPods picks up the voice better than other wireless headsets I've tested. And I always carry things in my hands. Asking for Siri to play a specific hands-free song while pacing the streets of New York is going to be a little magical, as Apple says.
