When James Holzhauer made a relatively low bet during the final round of Jeopardy during the episode of "Jeopardy!," Monday night, many viewers scratched their heads – but "Jeopardy!" Experts say the professional gambler's gamble was the best he could have done given the circumstances.
Holzhauer bets only $ 1,399 in Final Jeopardy, even getting Alex Trebek to notice the unusually low number, but Brad Rutter, the all-time leader in "Jeopardy!" told the Washington Post that it was actually the best way for Holzhauer to win in Monday's game.
Holzhauer had $ 23,400 before Final Jeopardy, with Emma Boettcher in first place with $ 26,600 and third, Jay Sexton with $ 11,000. Rutter explained that Holzhauer's only chance for victory would be that Boettcher misunderstands the Final Jeopardy issue and Holzhauer guesses correctly.

If Boettcher, who bet $ 20,201, misunderstood, he would have $ 6,399 remaining. Holzhauer, if he had understood it correctly, would have won with $ 24,799. In case Sexton answered correctly when Boettcher and Holzhauer both misjudged, he could have won. As a result, Holzhauer made a bet that would have made him leave with one dollar more than Sexton's maximum potential earnings of $ 22,000, Rutter noted.
If Holzhauer had bet everything and Boettcher guessed the final question of Jeopardy correctly, Boettcher would still win.

Holzhauer told Action Network that Rutter's analysis was correct.
"I knew I could only win if Emma was missing in Final Jeopardy because she would never bet to cover my total bet. My only concern was to let me pass by third place, and I bet just enough to make sure to bet on him, he said. Betting big would have looked good for the cameras, but now I turn my right wager (Emma misses) into the living room (Emma misses, and I understand). "

Holzhauer was not too disturbed by this defeat. He told the Atlantic that he was resigned to his fate before it was sealed. "By the time Final Jeopardy arrived, I knew my goose was cooked if Emma answered correctly. It's a bit like needing a team to miss a last-minute goal – nothing you can really do but watch, he said. I made peace with my destiny even before the final index was revealed. "

Holzhauer, who has won 32 straight games before losing, finished his reign with $ 2,464,216, including the $ 2,000 he won in his last game. This total is below the record set by "Jeopardy!" Legend Ken Jennings, who won $ 2,520,700 from 74 wins in 2004.
