Why some Baldur’s Gate 3 players are frustrated with its D&D mechanics

Some Baldur’s Gate 3 players struggled with the RNG of the D&D 5E rules used by the game. Larian already has alternatives under consideration.

A little over a month has passed since the launch of Larian Studios Baldur Gate 3 in Early Access, and the studio has started revealing some of the lessons it took from watching players interact with the game’s 20 Hours of Operation. In an interview with IGNLarian Studios founder Swen Vincke has revealed that not all players adhere to the 5E rules. Partly that’s because the dice rules apply not only to combat but also to aspects like dialogue and stealth. A player can try to persuade an NPC to make a certain decision, but if the D20 roll (plus the relevant stat bonuses) does not go in their favor, the NPC might decline. It also examines unspecified role-playing options (potentially more dialogue options) to give players further opportunities to resolve a situation as they see fit. Larian is also continuing its work in other areas Baldur Gate 3, such as balancing early level areas where players have fewer skills and magical abilities at their disposal.
