Why the giants should demand Takk McKinley

New York Giants would be advised to file a waiver request on former DE Falcons and first-round pick Takk McKinley to bolster pass rush

The Atlanta Falcons gave up former first-round pick Takk McKinley on Monday, and New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman should definitely claim the veteran pass rusher.

McKinley, selected by the Falcons with the 26th overall pick in 2016, produced 17 t sacks, 79 total tackles, 22 loss tackles and 45 quarterback hits.

According to Pro Football Focus, McKinley has had eight total presses in 55 instant assists this season while producing an overall rating of 69.8 in his four games played this season.

The Giants’ defense has produced 22 sacks so far this season, the ninth most in the NFL. However, whenever a team can add a player with a first-round pedigree who has shown their ability to be a productive pass passer, that should be explored.

For a defense trying to piece together a pass rush, without a rider dominating the double-digit sack pace in the first nine games of the season, if McKinley fell to the Giants on the waiver wire, he could be a low- cost, high addition on the rise with the second half of this season auditioning for 2021 and beyond.

McKinley has missed four games with a groin injury this season and his status for next week’s game was uncertain, before it was called off. The 25-year-old also seemed relatively unhappy with his role in defending the Falcons, so he could benefit from a change of scenery.

After this week’s victory over the Washington soccer team, the Giants fell to fourth place on the priority of the waiver wire, behind the New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars and Dallas Cowboys, who have all varying needs when it comes to finding passes.
