It has been just over a year since Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, declared their intention to take Megxit out of the British Royal Family. It all looks like a very long time ago: There is nothing like a pandemic to distract everyone from the royal drama, even an event as historic as a Prince of England quitting a job no one knew about even that it was possible to leave. The pandemic isn’t over, but lately you may have noticed that Harry and Meghan’s names are back in the air again, with some scary interview on the horizon. So now seems like a good time to check in with our favorite self-exiled prince and princess. Here’s what’s been going on with the Sussexes lately.
What finally happened with Megxit?
When Harry and Meghan first announced their intention to ‘step down’ from the royal family, it was unclear to what extent they would remain involved. They had initially hoped for some sort of hybrid role, although Queen Elizabeth, Harry’s 94-year-old grandmother, never seemed too enthusiastic about the idea. Buckingham Palace recently confirmed that Harry and Meghan will not be returning to their royal roles. The couple agreed to relinquish their ‘HRH’ (His Royal Highness) titles last year – well, technically, they’re keeping them but won’t use them, nice royal family nonsense in fine print.
The loss of those titles is a big deal symbolically, and the palace has also confirmed the loss of several other official royal responsibilities and appointments. Harry would be particularly upset to have lost his honorary military titles. “Although everyone is saddened by their decision, the Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family,” Buckingham Palace said in his funny and petty statement. In response, the Sussexes have pledged to remain committed to public service, HRH or not.
Is there a reason this news is coming out now?
Harry and Meghan officially stopped working as royals in March 2020, and the plan was that they would reassess the situation a year later, at the end of March 2021. According to People, the schedule has increased in due to the lingering tension of the couple. to represent the Queen as they made lucrative plans for their post-royal life with deals with Netflix and Spotify.
There’s also the Oprah factor: On March 7, CBS plans to air a “broad” interview between the media mogul and the couple, who would have Buckingham Palace “brace for embarrassing revelations,” according to the New York Times. The paper added, for anyone who hasn’t watched The crown this season, “the Tell-all talks have tended to be train wrecks for the royal family.” Both parties are now planning their upstream PR moves very carefully.
That’s why Harry was on the James Corden show …
Yeah, Harry probably knocked The late show this week as part of a planned charm offensive leading up to Oprah and everything to follow. At the same time that Harry was driving a double-decker bus around Los Angeles with the late-night host, the Queen was on television in England talking about the coronavirus vaccine. The Washington Post noted that “the two rare appearances left the impression that members of the royal family are highlighting their differences in public and on the front page.” And these won’t be the final head-to-head interviews: On the same day Oprah’s interview is supposed to air, the royals who haven’t been demoted will be on TV in England for a special of the Commonwealth Day.
How was Harry on Corden?
He looked good! He joked that taking a walk with the host finally gave him a chance to see more of his adopted home, Southern California, which was locked down essentially the entire time he lived there. The two visited the mansion of The prince of Bel-Air like a gag, and Harry has proven to be familiar with (or at least could successfully recite with some practice) the lyrics to this show’s famous theme song. They also briefly faced Meghan when visiting the mansion; she called Harry “Haz”. The prince also shared some thoughts on other issues, including The crown– it’s not quite correct, but it’s better than a lot of British press, he said. (He was probably smart not to criticize the Netflix show, given that he now works for Netflix.) Who would he choose to star himself? Damien Lewis. Not bad, Harry. The prince also shared anecdotes meant to show that he is still on good terms with his family, despite everything: Prince Philip, his sick 99-year-old grandfather, wouldn’t you know, is still learning how to do it . use Zoom!
Hey, weren’t Harry and Meghan involved in a kind of trial with the British press?
Yes they were – a few actually, and they recently had two big wins. Sweet justification! This month, Meghan secured summary judgment in her case against the parent company of the notorious Daily Mail tabloid for its invasive publication several years ago of a letter she wrote to her father. Harry also recently accepted an apology and “substantial damages” from the same company for claiming in an article that he “turned his back” on the Marines after leaving the royal family.
On those deals the couple made with Spotify and Netflix: are they actually going to make podcasts and TV shows?
Everyone wants to be a content creator these days. Make a surprise appearance at a Spotify event this week – again, timing! – Harry and Meghan spoke a bit about their ambitions for Archewell Audio, the production company they formed to create podcasts for this streamer. So far, they’ve produced a podcast episode, a 2020 vacation special, but they have big plans to, uh, “spark powerful conversations” “that inspire, challenge, and educate.” Awesome. As for the Netflix deal they signed in September, there have been rumors of what they are going to do and possibly totally unfounded reports that Netflix is not happy with what they are going to do. have proposed, but so far no official word on their plans. It seems unlikely that Meghan will return to her acting roots, but you never know.
Wait, do they have another child too?
After suffering a miscarriage, which she revealed in an article for the New York Times in November, Meghan (and Harry) recently announced that she was pregnant again. (The couple’s son Archie will be 2 in May.) Will the royal baby mania always be a thing when the royals involved are somehow no longer royal? We’re about to find out.
