WandaVision showrunner Jac Schaeffer discussed the decision to kill Maria Rambeau in Disney + ‘s first MCU series.

WandaVision was full of surprises, including the reveal that Lashana Lynch’s Maria Rambeau died of cancer in the five-year period from the Snap to the end of Avengers: Infinity War and the Blip in Avengers: Endgame.

Series showrunner Jac Schaeffer discussed the decision to kill Maria with Entertainment tonight, saying that “it was an important decision. We had a lot of conversations and Maria and Lashana, the actor, were so important in Captain Marvel and such a formidable character. We did not take this decision lightly. “In the end, however, Schaeffer and his team thought killing Maria” had really worked for Monica. [Rambeau]the character of and what it meant to her. We also really liked the idea that Maria built SWORD from scratch. “

Maria Rambeau made her Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut in Captain Marvel. Pilot and best friend of Carol Danvers, she helped Danvers remember her old life after the superhero returned to Earth six years after her apparent death in a plane crash. Her daughter, Monica Rambeau, also first appeared in this film as a child, played by Akira Akbar. Teyonah Parris portrays an older Monica in WandaVision and will reprise the role in the next Captain Marvel 2.

WandaVision is the first of many Marvel TV projects to release on Disney +. Next is The falcon and winter Soldier, which was supposed to launch programming in August, but was delayed in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Other ongoing series include Loki, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Moon knight and a series based on Black Pantherof Wakanda. During the last Disney Investor Day presentation, the House of Mouse also announced that projects based on Secret invasion, Ironheart and Armor wars are in development, as well as a collection of shorts following Baby Groot titled I am Groot. Finally, the animation What if…? is scheduled for release in summer 2021.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. New episodes air Fridays on Disney +.
