He’s having a hell of a time.
British actor Kayvan Novak, who plays Nandor The Relentless in FX’s vampire comedy “What We Do In The Shadows,” said his idea was to further showcase Nandor’s love life in Season 3 .
“It was something I had expressed when asked, ‘Where would you like Nandor to go? “I thought it would be exciting for him to explore his relationships and find love,” Novak, 42, told the Post on a call from his home in London.
“The writers decided to run with this concept and they gave me everything. All of my Christmases came at the same time, I had so many fun things to do this season. We laugh a lot on the set. It might be a cliché for a comedy set to talk about how much fun they have on set – but we really do. ”
Season 3 of the Emmy-nominated mock vampire documentary series (premieres Thursday at 10 p.m. on FX and Friday on Hulu) based on the 2014 film of the same name by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi continues the adventures of Nandor, a former Neurotic Ottoman Empire warrior and his vampire roommates in Staten Island: Lothario Laszlo (Matt Berry) and the sarcastic Nadja (Natasia Demetriou).
There’s also Nandor’s human familiar, Guillermo (Harvey Guillen), who takes care of the housework in hopes of becoming a vampire himself, and the energetic vampire Colin (Mark Proksch).
Season 3 kicks off with the central trio taking on new leadership roles at the local vampire council, while Nandor, who has had 37 wives (and loved 35), also wonders if there is more to life than “Killing and bloodthirsty.” As he ponders this, he flirts with a woman in his gym and the show features his occasional lover, Gail (Aida Turturro, “The Sopranos”).
“Nandor having another dysfunctional relationship to accompany his dysfunctional relationship with Guillermo seemed like a natural progression,” Novak said. “Aida Turturro playing the Incredible Gail was just a riot.”
Novak teased another character later in the season who, “I’m falling in love in a pretty serious way – and then Guillermo has to do something about it.”
Season 3 also has a kickball game scene in homage to the infamous vampire vampire in the first “Twilight” movie.
“It was a lot of fun,” Novak said. “All this snow [in the scene] was real snow. We’re like kids, I think we had one too many snowball fights that night. I liked a belly flop in the snow as a joke, and the costume [department people] were like, ‘No, the coat!’ I gave them a concern.
The new storylines centered around Nandor’s love have also given Novak, who dons an elaborate costume to play the bloodsucker, a new element to his look.
“I love to wear clothes,” he said. “It’s all the different layers, it’s the capes, it’s the leather doublet, it’s the buckles, the big boots. All of this helps tremendously to feel like Nandor and to feel like a vampire. Having said that, this season I was asked to do nudity. And it was a whole new experience, being Nandor in [just] a T-shirt and boots!
“I love playing Nandor, and I think it’s important for a performer to really take ownership of their character and to feel that when they’re playing their character, he’s in a kind of groove. If you’re not on it, you need to make some changes. But I feel pretty groovy as a Nandor.
