The cast of the sequel has not been confirmed, but IMDb currently has rumors that Margot Robbie, Jared Leto (The Joker) and Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag) would be part of it.
These guesses are not bad as Robbie turns into the role of Harley Quinn Birds of prey. It was also announced that she would be in Gotham City Sirens. The studio also supports Leto's Joker by giving his character a second film.
It's after the announcement already made that Todd Phillips directs and co-writes a film about the origin of the Joker. According to some sources, the story will take place in the 80s and will be a real crime drama. Martin Scorsese would also be involved.
So, DC apparently seeks to make the most of his characters and stars from Suicide team. Why would Smith have abandoned the sequel?

The movie star is rather busy Bad boys for life, Bright 2, and Bad Boys 4. One of these projects could prevent it from participating in this sequel.
Various reports have reported that sources claimed that Smith would not participate in the film because of the programming, and things ended amicably. The same report claims that the studio wanted Robbie, Smith and other stars to come back for the next, and then they turn around that.
Things are still early for the next movie. Gunn would have started producing in the fall. It should be interesting to see how the unexpected casting change will change the plot of the film.
