Tyler Rogers’ rising slider has confused MLB Twitter throughout this season, highlighting what has been a remarkable season for the Giants reliever. The impressive field rocked baseball fans on social media Friday night for a different reason, as referee Joe West somehow determined it was a strike for Jake Cronenworth.
As you can see, the red line superimposed by Rob Friedman is way off the plate, and the field has always landed outside that line. It was the first pitch of the at-bat between Rogers and Cronenworth, and the San Diego Padre ended up hitting three pitches to end the inning. West’s zone seemed to favor Rogers, at least in that batting presence.
West’s overall scoreboard for the game wasn’t dramatically bad, but Rogers’ strike barely fits into the warped area the veteran referee kept through the night.

As Friedman pointed out, it’s easy to criticize umpires for missed calls when average Joe probably wouldn’t do much better. However, it’s calls like this that accelerate the push of robot referees through the sport.
Either way, the Giants came out victorious, and that wouldn’t have done much to affect the game, as the Padres’ offense struggled to shake things up throughout the game.
