Deputy Director General of Penguins Bill Guerin was hired as General Manager of Minnesota Wild.
A source close to Guérin confirmed the hiring this afternoon, which was then formalized by an announcement of the team.
Guerin, a member of the 2009 Penguins Stanley Cup winning team, joined their team as the player's development manager in 2011. He was in his fifth season as an assistant director General here when he was selected to become the fourth director general in Wild History.
"Bill has been a winner throughout his hockey career", owner of Minnesota Craig Leopold said in a statement issued by the Wild. "I am extremely happy to be able to add his experience to our organization."
He succeeds Paul Fenton, who was fired earlier this summer after a season at work.
Guerin had become the favorite to land the job shortly after Fenton's dismissal. Former Penguins assistant, GM Tom Fitzgerald, now with New Jersey, was also mentioned as a possibility after Fenton imposed the post in 2018, but it is unclear how seriously he was taken this time.
Guerin, via SMS, declined an interview request, saying that he was "very busy".
In an interview with Wild's website, however, Guerin said, "I've had the chance to work with a lot of great people in Pittsburgh, which has given me an opportunity." It was unclear whether the Penguins would hire someone to replace Guerin or to assume his duties, including that of General Manager of the Penguins affiliate in the American Hockey League at Wilkes-Barre.
Jim Rutherford recently stated that he had a plan in place if the Wild recruited Guerin and that there were several internal candidates able to oversee the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton operation. He said that they include Jason Karmanos, also assistant general manager of the Penguins, director of professional testing Derek Clancey and scout pro Ryan Bowness.
Rutherford could not be contacted immediately for comment.
Guerin, 48, has played 18 seasons in the NHL, the last two here. He finished his career with 429 goals and 427 assists in 1,263 regular season games. He also played for New Jersey, where he won a Cup in 1995: Edmonton, Boston, Dallas, St. Louis, San Jose and the New York Islanders.
