Bleecker Street released a trailer for its romantic comedy Wild mountain thyme featuring Emily blunt and Jamie Dornan, and seriously, what is this cool hell? This movie looks positive horribleand believe it or not, he’s screenwriter John Patrick Shanleysequel to his excellent 2008 drama Doubt!
Blunt stars as stubborn farmer (what ???) Rosemary Muldoon, who is committed to winning the love and affection of her neighbor, Anthony Reilly (Dornan). The problem is, Anthony seems to have inherited a family curse, and remains oblivious to his beautiful admirer. Stung by his father Tony (Christopher walken) plans to sell the family farm to his American nephew (Jon hamm), Anthony is driven to pursue his dreams.
I had high hopes for this movie based on its star-studded cast and Oscar-winning director, but this trailer just didn’t work out for me. The tone is all over the place, to begin with, and if I wanted to watch a guy crash into an open field I’m not sure I would have chosen Dornan, who isn’t exactly known for his comedic skills. Frankly, I had a feeling that this movie would be problematic based strictly on the Woody allen-ish font on his poster, but then I heard Walken’s laughable Irish accent and I knew for sure.
Now Shanley has won an Oscar for writing Dreamer and got a second nomination for adapting his own play Doubt, so maybe he deserves the benefit of, uh, doubt here. After all, Wild mountain thymee is based on his acclaimed play, Outside of Mullingar. The Hollywood Reporter gave the game credit for its “emotional generosity,” but warned that “hardened cynics don’t need to apply,” and I guess I fall into the latter category because I don’t. just not buy what this trailer sells.
The star of the play, Dearloy Molloy, co-stars of the film, produced by Leslie Urdang, Anthony bregman, Alex witchel, Martina Niland, Michael A. Helfant and Bradley Gallo. I love these people a lot, and I’m a huge fan of this cast, but Wild mountain thyme just looks bad. Watch the trailer below and don’t say I didn’t warn you. To see what it looks like when Blunt has real chemistry with a co-star, click here to watch the disney trailer Jungle cruise, which associates the actress with Dwayne johnson.
